Netflix subscribers recently gave Gerard Butler’s 2017 disaster flick “Geostorm” an unexpected boost, sending it climbing into the streaming service’s Top 10 chart. While “Geostorm” garnered only modest critical reception, with an 18% score on Rotten Tomatoes its renewed popularity points to a strong audience appetite for Butler’s brand of high-stakes thrills.

However, fans might be even more excited to learn about a different Butler-led disaster film that is now set to receive a highly anticipated sequel. That film is “Greenland,” a survival drama originally released in 2020. Unlike “Geostorm,” “Greenland” earned substantial praise from critics, boasting a robust 77% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Initially hampered by pandemic-related delays and an unconventional streaming release, “Greenland” defied expectations, becoming a sleeper hit and capturing attention with Butler’s compelling, grounded performance. The film follows a family desperately navigating a planet-threatening comet event.

Now, a sequel titled “Greenland: Migration” is on the horizon. The film picks up the story of the original characters, following their harrowing journey out of their underground shelter into a devastated Europe in search of a new safe haven. The sequel, directed once again by Ric Roman Waugh, has completed filming and is scheduled to premiere later this year through Lionsgate.

Given the renewed attention “Geostorm” received on Netflix, expectations are high that “Greenland: Migration” will find an even larger audience, further cementing Gerard Butler’s reputation as a leading figure in the disaster-action genre.
