Max has become the latest streaming service to implement measures to curb password sharing. Following the trend set by Netflix and Disney+, Max is introducing an Extra Member Add-On feature, allowing subscribers to add one extra user outside their household for an additional $7.99 per month.

Launching today, April 22, this new feature includes a convenient profile transfer option, ensuring extra members retain their viewing history, personalized recommendations, and account settings. However, the add-on is limited to one extra profile and can be used on just one device at a time. It’s important to note this option is available exclusively to direct Max subscribers, excluding those who subscribe via bundled offers.

Max’s pricing remains consistent across all subscription tiers, whether viewers choose the $9.99/month ad-supported plan, the Standard $16.99/month plan, or the Premium option at $20.99/month—the add-on cost stays fixed at $7.99.

Warner Bros. Discovery has indicated that subscribers can soon expect notifications about new restrictions on account sharing, underscoring a broader strategy to encourage individual account usage.

Netflix pioneered this crackdown two years ago with an add-on priced at $6.99/month, slightly cheaper than Max’s version, and notably cheaper than Netflix’s own basic subscription plan. This initiative significantly boosted Netflix’s subscriber base and revenue recovery following previous losses.

Disney+ implemented a similar feature last year, charging $6.99/month for Basic ad-supported subscribers and $9.99/month for Premium users seeking to add additional profiles.

JB Perrette, CEO and President of Global Streaming and Games at Warner Bros. Discovery, emphasized the aim of the new Max features, stating: “Extra Member Add-On and Profile Transfer are designed to offer our subscribers maximum flexibility and seamless continuity, enhancing their streaming experience while also addressing account sharing effectively.”
