Fans eagerly anticipating a cinematic crossover between sisters Vera and Taissa Farmiga in “The Conjuring: Last Rites” will unfortunately have to manage their expectations. Michael Chaves, director of both “The Nun II” and the final entry in the Conjuring franchise, explained why the highly anticipated connection between the sisters’ characters never materialized.
The 2023 film “The Nun II” teased a possible intersection by including a post-credits scene featuring Vera Farmiga alongside her co-star Patrick Wilson, igniting fan theories about an onscreen reunion between the Farmiga sisters. However, Chaves disclosed to Entertainment Weekly that legal and creative constraints related to the franchise’s commitment to authenticity prevented this crossover from occurring.
Chaves explained, “I was really craving more of a connection between ‘The Nun’ and the Warrens. However, it starts to actually get into some tricky legal territory because all these stories are based on true events.”
While the authenticity of “true events” portrayed in “The Conjuring” films is often debated, Chaves and the production team prioritized maintaining the realism surrounding Ed and Lorraine Warren’s documented cases. Introducing fictional relationships, even between real-life siblings, risked diminishing the core authenticity.
“If you lean too much into fictional family connections, it starts to diminish the authenticity of the main storyline,” Chaves clarified.
Despite this missed crossover opportunity, “The Conjuring: Last Rites” aims to deliver a compelling and authentic conclusion to the beloved horror franchise when it arrives in theaters this September.
