The Memorial Day box office achieved a historic milestone this weekend, driven by two major film releases. Walt Disney Studios’ live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch debuted to a spectacular $183 million domestically, making it the highest single-film opening ever for the Memorial Day frame, surpassing Top Gun: Maverick’s previous record of $190 million set in 2022. Globally, the film has already accumulated an impressive $341 million against its reported $100 million budget.

Meanwhile, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning delivered the franchise’s best three-day opening in the U.S. at $63 million, outperforming Mission: Impossible – Fallout‘s $61.2 million debut from 2018. With a domestic total of $77 million over the four-day weekend and a global gross of $204 million, the latest Tom Cruise vehicle utilized IMAX screens significantly. However, with its substantial reported production budget of $400 million, Paramount will need strong legs in theaters to recoup its investment, though the studio remains optimistic about its long-term profitability.

Thanks largely to these two blockbuster releases, the overall Memorial Day weekend domestic box office reached an all-time record of approximately $325.6 million, surpassing the previous high of $314 million set in 2013.
