Danny Boyle’s highly anticipated horror sequel, 28 Years Later, is just weeks away from release, and early footage has revealed chilling new insights into the film’s storyline.
In a special screening, director Danny Boyle shared the film’s first 28 minutes, which were intense, atmospheric, and deeply unsettling. Although Boyle expressed his desire for audiences to see the entire movie now, he noted that the studio wants to protect crucial plot details from leaking.
The footage shown confirms the film strongly ties into the events of both 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, firmly establishing the sequel within the series’ canon. Particularly noteworthy was the previously teased “Teletubbies flashback,” where a young boy watches his family succumb to the initial outbreak of the Rage virus.
Much of the opening act explores the fortified community of Holy Island, where protagonist Jamie (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) prepares his son Spike (Alfie Williams) for his first encounter with the Infected. Another significant plot element introduced involves Isla (Jodie Comer), who, despite supposedly being uninfected, exhibits troubling symptoms—fevers, anger, and pain—foreshadowing potentially sinister developments.
The preview also highlighted the introduction of new types of infected: slower, less-threatening “slow lows” and more dangerous “Alphas,” adding fresh dynamics to the franchise’s mythology.
28 Years Later is scheduled to debut in theaters later in 2025, promising fans a return to the terrifying world Danny Boyle and Alex Garland first created two decades ago.
