The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that global superstar Tom Cruise will receive his first-ever Academy Award, an Honorary Oscar, during the upcoming 16th annual Governors Awards. Cruise will be honored alongside legendary choreographer and actress Debbie Allen, and acclaimed production designer Wynn Thomas. Additionally, country music icon Dolly Parton will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
Cruise’s Long-Awaited Oscar Recognition
Tom Cruise, renowned for his dedication to cinema, receives this prestigious recognition after a storied career and four previous Oscar nominations. Cruise was nominated for acting roles in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia, as well as for producing Top Gun: Maverick. Despite his illustrious career, a competitive Oscar has thus far eluded him, making this honorary award especially notable.
Academy President Janet Yang commended Cruise for his:
“incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community,”
highlighting his tireless efforts in advocating for cinema and theatrical releases.
Celebrating Extraordinary Contributions to Cinema
The ceremony will take place on November 16, 2025, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Los Angeles. It will not be televised.
- Debbie Allen will be celebrated for her immense influence on dance, film, and television.
- Wynn Thomas will receive recognition for his visionary contributions to film production design.
This year’s Governors Awards continue the tradition of recognizing outstanding and impactful careers in the film industry, celebrating those whose contributions extend beyond traditional competitive categories.
