The Social Reckoning, the highly anticipated follow-up to the acclaimed 2010 film The Social Network, is officially scheduled for theatrical release on October 9, 2026. The film reunites audiences with Facebook’s complex world, this time focusing on the company’s explosive 2021 controversies.

Written and directed by Aaron Sorkin, who also helmed the original film, The Social Reckoning explores Facebook’s internal practices, the spread of misinformation, the platform’s impact on teen mental health, and its alleged connection to the events of January 6 at the U.S. Capitol. Sorkin’s return to this subject marks a continuation of his sharp, timely storytelling that characterized the original narrative. The cast includes Jeremy Strong as Mark Zuckerberg and Mikey Madison portraying whistleblower Frances Haugen, whose disclosures ignited public debate about the platform’s ethics. Jeremy Allen White stars as Jeff Horowitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter behind The Facebook Files investigative articles.

The ensemble cast is further strengthened by Bill Burr, whose involvement adds a distinctive edge. The production team features prominent names such as Todd Black, Peter Rice, and Stuart Besser, alongside Sorkin. Positioned for release during the Indigenous Peoples’ Day weekend, The Social Reckoning will face stiff competition from Universal’s Other Mummy and Paramount Animation’s The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender.

The original The Social Network was a critical and commercial landmark, grossing over $226 million worldwide and securing eight Academy Award nominations, winning three including Best Adapted Screenplay. It notably launched the careers of actors such as Jesse Eisenberg and Rooney Mara. This follow-up is positioned to provide an equally incisive perspective on the current digital landscape, with a focus on corporate accountability and societal impact.
