“A Minecraft Movie” has revitalized the sluggish box office with an impressive debut, earning a record-breaking $157 million domestically and an additional $144 million internationally.
Starring Jason Momoa, Jack Black, and Jennifer Coolidge, the film significantly exceeded expectations, nearly doubling initial forecasts. This strong performance sets a new benchmark for video game adaptations, surpassing the previous record held by “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which opened with $146.4 million in 2023.
Based on the hugely popular 2011 video game, the Warner Bros. film has emerged as a major success, delivering the largest domestic opening of the year. Produced alongside Legendary Pictures, the film had an estimated production budget of around $150 million, not including marketing costs.
“We’re absolutely thrilled by the incredible global response to ‘A Minecraft Movie,’” stated Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy, co-CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group. They praised the decade-long dedication of Jesse Ehrman and the Warner Bros. Pictures team for successfully bringing the film to audiences.
This blockbuster marks the first film in 2025 to cross the $100 million threshold at the domestic box office. According to Comscore, its robust performance could significantly narrow the year-to-date box office shortfall, reducing the gap from approximately 13% behind 2024 numbers to around 5%.
In contrast, Amazon-MGM’s Jason Statham-led action thriller “A Working Man” garnered $7.2 million, while the religious-themed “The Chosen: The Last Supper” (Season 5) Part 2, released by Fathom Entertainment, debuted with $7 million, ranking third for the weekend.
