Disney has indefinitely paused development on the live-action adaptation of its beloved 2010 animated movie, “Tangled,” sources confirm.
Michael Gracey, best known for directing “The Greatest Showman,” was set to direct the film, while Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, the screenwriter behind “Thor: Love and Thunder,” was attached to write the screenplay.
The decision to pause the project follows the underwhelming box-office performance of Disney’s recent live-action release, “Snow White,” which has grossed a modest $69 million domestically and $145 million globally.
At this point, it remains uncertain whether Disney will revisit the live-action “Tangled” adaptation in the future.
Meanwhile, Disney continues to tap into its animated catalogue, with highly anticipated live-action adaptations of “Lilo and Stitch,” scheduled for release on May 23, and “Moana,” slated for July 10, 2026. “Moana” benefits from recent audience engagement, boosted by the blockbuster success of its animated sequel last year. Additionally, “Lilo and Stitch” has generated significant buzz; its Super Bowl promotional spot became Disney’s most viewed digital ad, and its March trailer was the studio’s second-most viewed live-action trailer within the first 24 hours.
The original “Tangled” film was a critical and commercial success, earning nearly $600 million worldwide and securing an Oscar nomination for its original song. It currently holds an 89% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, praised by critics and families alike.
