Allowing theatrical films extra time in theaters can significantly benefit their performance, especially if they’re already successful. Conversely, a hit movie likely won’t be harmed by an early home video release, though keeping theaters interested can become challenging. Apple’s film F1 avoided this issue because the company has not yet announced its home video or Apple TV+ streaming release dates. Distributed by Warner Bros., F1 has become a major success, currently the biggest blockbuster of Brad Pitt’s career, largely due to strong international performance and significant interest in the IMAX format.
The film had a substantial budget, though exact figures have been disputed. Apple has previously given theatrical releases to films like Napoleon (Sony), Killers of the Flower Moon (Paramount), and Argylle (Universal), but none achieved profitability at the box office. In fact, Argylle couldn’t surpass the $100 million mark. Directed by Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), F1 is now the highest-grossing film ever produced by a tech company. The movie also earned strong critical praise, holding a near-perfect 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Brad Pitt’s previous hit films include Inglourious Basterds, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Troy. Unlike many of his peers or the generation after him, Pitt has not participated in superhero or franchise films, except for the Ocean’s trilogy. There have been discussions about a possible sequel to F1, as well as a crossover with the Tom Cruise-led film Days of Thunder.
